Jasmiyah and Tasmiyah Whitehead said they brutally beat and stabbed their mother during a brawl that erupted after the 16-year-old girls woke up late for school. The teens' confessed on tape, which aired on a local NBC affiliate Wednesday, before they were sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Jasmiyah and Tasmiyah Whitehead told investigators how an argument with their 34-year-old mother, Jarmecca, turned into a matter of life or death in the kitchen of the family’s Conyers home the morning of Jan. 13, 2010, according to their confession tapes obtained by WXIA-TV.
“My state of mind at the time was defend yourself,” Jasmiyah recalled in the video, which aired Wednesday on the local NBC affiliate.
“It wasn’t like a fight on the street, it was more like a fight until somebody dies.”

Jarmecca (Nikki) Whitehead was killed by her twin 16-year-old daughters during a fight inside their Conyers, Georgia, home in January 2010.

 The twins said their 34-year-old mother was angry that her daughters were running late for school after they overslept, and threatened them with a pot she picked up off the stove. “She just started waving the pot around things like whatever, so I guess she was trying to hit us with the pot,” Jasmiyah said.
“We all yelling,” she added. “We all mad.”

She said that she and her sister had wrested the pot from their mother’s hand when the woman grabbed a knife.
“She grabbed the knife and said get back but she didn’t keep the knife in her hand,” Tasmiyah said.
But the wild fight continued into the living room, where Jasmiyah smashed a red vase over her mother’s head. But it didn’t slow the woman, who Jasmiyah claimed then bit her in the chest.

“She latched on to me and I tried to get her off, because it hurts,” she recalled. “So I’m trying to punch her. I guess that’s when Tas stabs her. She stabbed her.”
Jasmiyah said she started to choke her mother with a ribboned medallion she won as a child. But when Jarmecca slapped her, the teen grabbed the knife and started to stab her.
The mother eventually stopped fighting, but was still alive as her daughters carried her bleeding body to the tub in her bathroom, where they drowned her.

The twins initially claimed that they walked into the blood-stained crime scene after coming home from school.

Jasmiyah told Rockdale County District Attorney Richard Read during her interview that she told her mother she was sorry as she dragged her body through her bedroom.
The teens changed their clothes and went to school before coming home and calling police as if they stumbled across the crime scene.
They maintained their innocence for several months, until investigators arrested them for murder. Each was sentenced to 30 years in prison earlier this year, after they pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

“I didn’t hate her,” Jasmiyah said during her confession. “And Tas didn’t hate her either. I guess it was just the heat of the moment and the anger between all three of us.”
