A faulty lock at the Fulton County jail led to a brief romantic interlude for a death row prisoner and a female inmate, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
The incident took place in the medical wing at the jail last week, according to an official incident report obtained by the AJC.

Norris Speed admitted to jamming a lock so he could invite inmate Jasmine Jones into his cell for a quickie. But Speed told officers that Sheriff Deputy Michael Watts’ “unfortunate timing” prevented him from being able “to do anything” with the accused murderer.

But Jones admitted to having consensual sex with Speed.
“She stated that inmate Speed popped opened the side door and told her to come into his cell. Inmate Jones then stated that she was tempted and let the lust get the best of her so she willingly entered inmate Speed’s cell although she was extremely nervous,” Watts wrote.
Speed was sentenced to death for murdering Atlanta police Officer Niles Johangten in 1991. He was returned to the jail in 2011 to await a series of hearings regarding his capital murder case.
Jones was booked into the jail in October 2011 on murder and robbery charges. She has been at the jail awaiting trial for 956 days as of Monday, sheriff spokeswoman Tracy Flanagan told the AJC.
The faulty locks at the jail are a well-documented nuisance. Inmates routinely jam the locks with items such as toilet paper and soap. Violent felons are often seen roaming the halls, putting the staff and other inmates at risk.
$5 million has been budgeted to replace about 1,300 faulty locks at the jail. But the locks in the medical wing still have not been replaced. That work is supposed to be completed by July according to recent reports obtained by the AJC.
