The Dansoman Police Command has seized 12 goats which were retrieved from thieves at Tuba near the Weija toll booth in Accra.

One of the suspected thieves, Da-Rocha, a father of five, was arrested in the process while another suspect, known only as Azita, escaped arrest.

The Dansoman Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Kwadwo Antwi Tabi said Da-Rocha was arrested with the goats in the company of Azita, who managed to escape.

Narrating how the suspected goat thief was arrested, the police chief said his outfit had tip-off that suspects had been stealing goats from the Winnebo area to Accra for sale.

On Sunday night June 3, 2012, officers were dispatched to the Kasoa-Winneba road to ambush the suspects.

Subsequently at about 3:00pm an Opel Vectra saloon car emerged from the Kasoa stretch of the road.

The car, with registration number AS 7967 R, was intercepted and spot check revealed 12 goats concealed at the rare side of the vehicle, but the police could not open the booth.

They realized that tens of small apertures had been created into the booth cover to allow some form of ventilation to save the animals.

During interrogation, Da-Rocha told the police that he owned the car and that Azita only hired his services to transport the animals, adding that he normally used the vehicle for hiring.

However the police said when they intercepted the car Azita was the one driving.

Da-Rocha, a resident of Ablekuma, said Azita called him on that fateful day to assist him convey some goods to Accra, adding that he was stranded somewhere between Breku and Budumburam in the Central Region.

The suspects said when he got to the place and realized that the animals were on board a faulty vehicle, he helped the runaway suspect to transfer the animals onto his vehicle to travel to the slaughter house at James Town.

He would be arranged before court after investigation.

The police appealed to persons residing in the Breku-Budumburam araa to visit the Dansoman Police Station to indentify and retrieve their goats since they don’t have enough space to keep them.
